As a Church School, we believe in a broad, balanced and varied curriculum. We follow a 3-year rolling program to ensure that our pupils receive the very best opportunities and experience a multitude of topics and themes from Nursery to Year 6.
In the Foundation/Early Years the children learn through a range of play activities, having first hand and practical experiences. Early reading and Maths are paramount, and the children follow child centred sessions with teacher led activities.
As the children progress into Key Stage 1 and 2, they are taught through a variety of different approaches. We use our stunning local surroundings to our advantage and our weekly Forest School lessons are a big part of this. Being a small school, we operate as a school family, celebrating the children’s successes and achievements. We have close links with Ilam Church and hold half termly school services there.
The children follow topic themed work, often using related texts in English. Each Autumn Term 1, the whole school focus upon a whole school themed book. Some of the books we have used recently include Leon and the Place Between, If all the World and the trilogy of Journey, Quest and Return.
Our pupils also have opportunities to visit places outside locality. These include a trip to Parliament and the London Eye, Stanley Head Outdoor Education Centre, East Midlands Airport and Thornton’s Chocolates.
