British Values

Promoting and learning about British Values at Ilam CE VA Primary School

In accordance with The Department for Education and our Christian faith, we aim to actively promote British values in schools to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain. Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.

The 5 Key Values are:

  • Democracy
  • Rule of law
  • Individual liberty
  • Mutual respect
  • Tolerance

On a more general level, the school undertakes daily collective worship which upholds our Christian Values of:

  • Caring
  • Courageous
  • Forgiving
  • Respectful
  • Resilience

Aspects of our Christian Values and British Values are taught within formal lessons- PSHE and RE lessons and on an informal nature throughout our curriculum.

Underpinning these are the 8 values that we wish to live by.

  • We treat everybody equally
  • We understand right from wrong
  • We understand the consequences of our actions
  • We listen to and respect other people’s opinions and values
  • We try to help other people
  • We know that we are all special
  • We understand and respect the roles of people who may help us.
  • We respect the culture and beliefs of others

Events and activities

The Autumn term sees Harvest being celebrated at Ilam Church. Pupils donate their Harvest items which are then given to the Ashbourne Foodbank which supports local families.

All our pupils take part in the annual act of remembrance and observe the 2 minutes silence to remember all those who have served for our country. They also undertake discussions and make poppies to learn about why we remember.

We teach our children about the importance of democracy and freedom of speech and visibly demonstrate this in the running of our school through our school council. Children in Kingfisher Class visit the Palace of Westminster and are able to tour the Houses of Commons and Lords, where they are also given opportunity to take part in a workshop about our parliament and how it runs.

To recognise the importance of our Monarchy and its place within our society, our Kingfisher Class are able to enjoy a concert at the Royal Albert Hall and afterwards take in the well-known sights of London such as Buckingham Palace, The Mall and Trafalgar Square.

School Council also plays a vital role in giving pupils further opportunity to practise democracy. Each year, pupils vote for a representative for each year group. This is supported by our Head Girl and Boy. Our children are encouraged to be confident to share news and opinions in lessons, worship and they take part in our half termly Church services. They also have opportunities to participate in our school-based worship.

The Christian, rural and historic British traditions within our school year are observed. At Christmas we celebrate the Nativity and peace and goodwill form a predominant theme.  Through fundraising for different charities, the children are made aware of those less fortunate. Recent charity fundraising has seen our pupil’s raising money for the Isabella Peatfield Charity, Children in Need, and the Meningitis Trust.

At the annual Dovedale Fete, all the pupils learn to dance around the Maypole. This is important date in the diary for the local community.

Despite being a small school, our pupils have opportunities to participate in a wide range of sports throughout the year with other similar sized local school. This encourages the understanding of fairness, tolerance, and resilience.

Our annual Sports Day involves all our children taking part in a number of individual races and team events.

Through a whole school visit to the Derby Open Centre, our children are able to visit and learn about the different faiths which are followed in Britain. This provides our children an understanding of all who live in Britain and helps foster and embrace the huge diversity of ethnic backgrounds, cultures, and backgrounds of our society.
