We use the Oxford Reading Tree and Project X reading schemes, followed by free reading. Every child has a reading record booklet and we expect them to read at home every day. We expect parents to listen to children and update the reading records.
In nursery and reception, reading is taught through a rigorous phonics approach to decode words with phonetically decodable reading books – along with lots of discussion about stories and their content. Beyond this, we transition to reading material that is not phonically based.
To teach phonics, we use Song of Sounds.
