Who’s Who

Mrs Carol Gunn-Smith - Headteacher; Woodpeckers Class Teacher

As the Headteacher of such a wonderful school I have to say that I feel rather privileged.   I have been teaching for well over twenty years and have spent most of my career in inner city schools teaching years 5 and 6.  This is my second headship.

I love it here at Ilam because it is such a beautiful environment to work in, but what makes our school so special to me is the people.

When I’m not at school I like to spend time with my family which is very important to me.  I have a wonderful husband, one brilliant son and a fantastic daughter in law (who is like a daughter to me), two lovely step daughters and a gorgeous granddaughter. Until recently I was a season ticket holder at Stoke City Football Club but have found it increasingly difficult to attend as I love to look after my young granddaughter as often as possible.

Carol Gunn-Smith, Headteacher

I am the Robins Class Teacher and I have worked at Ilam School since January 2012. I never tire of my commute to such a beautiful location and often think how lucky I am to work here. Apart from class teacher, my roles at Ilam School include Art, History and Geography coordinator. I have a love for Art and all things creative. I have a special interest in History and I have a degree in Geography. As Art coordinator I have created a portfolio of the children’s art work from Nursery up to Year 6. It is fascinating to see how their skills develop and just how important Art is in the curriculum for developing their creativity. I am a keen cook, and along with my colleague Carol Compton we run an after school Cooking Club. This is incredibly popular and we are always oversubscribed. The club takes place in the staff room and we have lots of fun developing important life skills and of course eating our results!

Mrs Kate Greenwood – Robins Class Teacher

I teach the Owls Class (Year 3 and 4) and am responsible for Maths throughout the school. I feel very lucky to work in such a happy and supportive school in beautiful and stunning surroundings. I enjoy teaching lessons which will engage and encourage children to become independent and resilient learners.

Since qualifying as a teacher in 1995, I have taught in Derby and in Cheadle. Both my children came to Ilam School and are now at QEGS in Ashbourne. I was a Parent Governor during this time and also the Chair of Governors.

I enjoy spending time with my husband and 2 children, Alice and Tom. My other interests and hobbies include cooking, art and swimming.

Mrs Rachel Linton – Owls Class Teacher

I would just like to start off by saying thank you to all staff, pupils and parents for giving me such a warm welcome into Ilam school.  I am extremely excited to be starting my teaching career here in the Ducks class and cannot wait to see what this next year brings!

Miss Emily Goldstraw – Nursery and Reception Teacher

I have worked at Ilam School for a very long time, welcoming all the new children to the school.  My job has mainly been in Early Years, supporting the Reception/Year 1 children.  I love to see the children develop and change throughout the school and maintain a great relationship with them as they grow.  I am enjoying the challenges and fun in the new nursery and Ilam school is a big part of my life.

Mrs Vera Nottage

I started at Ilam as a volunteer.  I was studying a Child Development course at college and needed some work experience.  I thought Ilam was the loveliest place I could think of to do that and I have been here ever since.  I cover the teachers’ planning time which is great because I get the opportunity to work with all the children.  I support the children in their learning on the computers, and in particular learning coding and how to write simple programs. I am impressed by how quickly the children learn and how much they teach me!
